Review: Too Faced x Kandee Johnson I Want Kandee Collection

I have to start this off by saying I was so excited when I saw Kandee was doing a collaboration with Too Faced. I’ve been a fan of hers for years can remember back in the day reading her Kandee J blog.

I ordered the eyeshadow palette and one of the Melted Matte lipsticks from her collection. The collection was limited edition, and only sold at Ulta. As much as I loved all the pieces, being on a college student budget doesn’t allow for me to buy whole collections of makeup. So I didn’t get to try as much as I would have liked.

However,  I have thoroughly tested what I got and am going to share my thoughts with all of you!

Kandee has been such a huge inspiration to my love for beauty products so I was so happy she got a moment with Too Faced! I’ve learned a lot of my tips and tricks from her, and have spent hours watching her videos. Back when I was 14 or 15, I used to watch her videos, trying to learn to style my hair or makeup. When the feather extension was a huge trend in 2011, I remember watching her put one in her own hair and just wanting to do all kinds of stuff like that on my own.

My little makeup collection was so small back then, but I can remember just being so excited to watch her do different looks. It makes me so excited to see a palette with her name on it in my ever growing collection.

Fast forward to this year, I was so thrilled when I saw her collaboration with Sinful Colors earlier this year. I loved the colors she chose so much, I bought quite a few of them. They’re some of my favorite nail polishes to this day. I loved that when she came out with that collab, she noted how she wanted the products to be affordable for all her subscribers.

I was so happy she got to have her chance at a collaboration, because so many beauty gurus who have been around for much less time than Kandee, and have had multiple collaborations with big brands. It’s fair to say Kandee was one of the original beauty YouTubers, and to see her go from filming little tutorials in her bathroom or on her bed to getting her name on a Too Faced palette is so exciting!

I bought the eyeshadow palette for $45 and the Melted Matte lipstick in Freshly Baked for $22.

First of all, I really liked the color selection for the line. Some beauty gurus were a little disappointed in the collection and said they hoped that it would have had more fun colors for being a candy themed collection. Others said it was very similar to some of Too Faced’s other palettes, the chocolate bar and the chocolate bon bon palette, for example. While I think both are true, I don’t think Kandee intended for this to be a palette you only use once or twice and keep on a shelf. In her video swatching and sharing the palette, she said she wanted this to be a palette people could use every day, or a palette that would be easy for people just starting makeup to use.

I Want Kandee Eyeshadow Palette

I think with her intention to make the palette something for everyone, the palette makes much more sense and I absolutely love it. The colors are all beautiful, and I love the color story. They have four shades organized in quads to kind of guide people who might be new to makeup.

I think that’s one of the best things with this palette is that it really is a good investment. For people looking to start in big brand makeup, it really could be a starter kit. The palette also comes with a little guide for simple eye looks with the palette.

I love the mattes and the shimmer shades, and find them all to be extremely pigmented.

The one thing with the quality of the shadows is some of the more glittery or shimmery colors in the palette are a little tricky to get to stick to the eye. If you build up too much with other shades, the shimmer shades won’t really stick at all. I usually take a little extra primer or concealer and dot it on before applying the shimmer so it sticks.

L to R: Sparkling Cider, Pastry, Butterscotched, Sweet Toffee. The warmer quad of the Palette
L to R: Sugared Strawberry, Cream Puff, Frosted Pink, Hot Chocolate. The Neutrals in the Palette.
L to R: Sugar Plum, Raspberry Cocoa, Taupe Berry, Licorice Rope. The deep and daring colors of the palette.

I really like this palette for every day and evening looks. The whipped cream color for a little cheek highlight. Some of my favorite colors are Whipped Cream, Ice Cream, Raspberry Cocoa, Taupe Berry, Cream Puff, Frosted Pink, Sparkling Cider and Sweet Toffee.

It’s definitely a versatile palette, although it might not look like it on first glance.

Too Faced Melted Matte Lipstick in Freshly Baked

The melted Matte lipstick in Freshly Baked is the perfect mauve lipstick. I love it and wear it for every day looks and special occasions. It also complements the palette colors really well. This is the first Melted Matte lipstick I’ve tried, so I didn’t know much about the formula. I would say the formula for this one is a little bit dry on my lips. I don’t personally know how to feel about them. In my collection, I have drugstore matte lipsticks with the same dryness to them, but they were $5. For a $21 lipstick, I’m not sure it’s the quality I expected. It makes my lips look very dry and matte.

As for Tarte’s Tarteist Lip Paints, for less money they’re much less drying and last all day.

I use this one with a similar colored lipliner for all day wear.

Final Thoughts

I know this was just a couple items, and I really wish I had gotten to try more. I just couldn’t justify buying some products I thought I wouldn’t use very much. Overall I’m very happy with it. The packaging is absolutely adorable!

Like I said I’m so happy for Kandee and I really think she made a great collection for everyone. I was doing my makeup with a friend and she was in love with Kandee’s palette. I’ve been using mine for almost two months now, and I adore it!
